Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony

Douglas Co. Sheriff's Office - 05/10/18 


Douglas County Law Enforcement Officers will participate locally in a memorial ceremony, held in honor of those who have given their lives in the performance of their duties. We will pay special tribute to the five Douglas County Law Enforcement Officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

  • Sergeant Gerald Chirrick—Douglas Co. S.O.
  • Corporal Virgle Knight, Jr—Douglas Co. S.O.
  • Special Deputy Ronald Terwilliger—Douglas Co. S.O.
  • Deputy Morris Taylor—Douglas Co. S.O.
Scheduled speakers include: Sheriff John Hanlin and Commissioner Chris Boice

The ceremony will last about 30 minutes. The media and public are encouraged to attend.

HISTORY: 
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation declaring May 15th as Peace Officer's Memorial Day and the week in which that falls National Police Week. 
Officer Desues lost his life on Friday, August 7, 1959 as a result of the Roseburg Blast. He was 32 years old. 
Sergeant Chirrick (44), Corporal Knight (35) and Spc. Deputy Terwilliger (36) all passed on July 23, 1985 as a result of a helicopter crash while on a law enforcement operation. 
Deputy Taylor (38) was fatally wounded from a gunshot wound on September 14, 2002 after responding to a report involving a man performing lewd acts at a motel in Curtin.
