Friday Afternoon Disturbance Leads to Two Arrests, Seizure of a Stolen Handgun

Portland Police Bureau - 06/09/18

On Friday June 8, 2018, at 1:14 p.m., East Precinct officers responded to the 3700 block of Southeast 79th Avenue to investigate a disturbance involving a firearm.

Officers arrived in the area and learned that two men were involved in a dispute and that one man displayed a hatchet while the other displayed a handgun. The two men did not fight and both remained near the scene, speaking with police.

The men were identified as 27-year-old Samuel Sikes, a neighborhood resident, and 37-year-old Dathan Jude McCrary, no local address.

Based on information learned at the scene, Sikes was arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Jail on a charge of Menacing for displaying the hatchet. He will be arraigned on Monday in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

Officers continued to investigate and developed probable cause to believe that McCrary was in possession of a firearm in his backpack and that he was a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms.

Portland Police Bureau Gun Task Force officers responded to assist with the investigation, obtaining a search warrant for McCrary's backpack. In the backpack, officers located and seized a loaded handgun. Officers checked the serial number of the handgun and learned that it was listed as stolen.

McCrary was arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Loaded Firearm in the City, and Theft in the First Degree. He will be arraigned on Monday in Multnomah County Circuit Court.
