Junction City High School student taken into custody after posting menacing message on Snapchat
Late this afternoon the Junction City Police was notified by Junction City High School staff that, after school, a student had posted an image on Snapchat of himself with a gun. The image had a scripted statement reading "Don't Come to School Tomorrow". The photo was NOT taken on school premises.
Officers immediately responded to the student’s home and secured the weapon. The student was cooperative, very passive, and was taken into custody without incident. Investigation revealed the weapon displayed was not a firearm, but rather and air-powered BB gun. The student stated he was not serious, never intended to threaten or hurt anyone, and that he posted the photo thinking it as a joke. The student was lodged at the Lane County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of Disorderly Conduct I and Harassment.
Co-Principal Brian Young stated “We take any potential threat to the safety of our students very seriously. Keeping our students safe is our top priority; please help us by encouraging all students to be talking to adults if they know about something that could be a danger to our schools.”
The Junction City Police and the Junction City School District want to thank those individuals who provided us with the information necessary to investigate and bring closure to this incident. Only by working as a school community in partnership with parents, students, and police can we create and maintain the level of safety that we want for our children and that they certainly deserve.
Anyone with additional information on this incident is requested to contact the Junction City Police Department at 541-998-1245.
