Suspect Arrested After Assaulting Officer In Portland's Goose Hollow Neighborhood

Portland Police Bureau - 06/06/18
On Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at 6:18 p.m., Central Precinct officers responded to the report of a disturbance involving multiple people near Southwest Taylor Street and Southwest 17th Avenue.

As officers responded to the scene, a caller to 9-1-1 reported some of those involved in the disturbance were on top of vehicles.

When two officers arrived in their patrol vehicle, they located a suspect believed to be involved in the fight on Southwest 18th Avenue between Southwest Salmon Street and Southwest Taylor Street. The suspect approached the officers' patrol vehicle and began punching and jumping on top of the police car. The officers requested additional officers respond to the location to assist with the suspect. When additional officers arrived, they attempted to provide the suspect directions, in order to take him into custody. The suspect charged at officers, striking and injuring one of the officers. An officer attempted to deploy a Taser, but it was ineffective and the suspect ran away.

Officers pursued the suspect on foot. When the suspect arrived at the intersection of Southwest 17th Avenue and Southwest Taylor Street, he turned around and charged at officers again. An officer deployed a less lethal foam impact round to keep the suspect from attacking. The foam impact round struck the suspect and officers were able to take the suspect into custody.

Medical personnel responded to treat both the officer and the suspect, who exhibited signs of being under the influence of intoxicants. The injured officer was transported to a Portland hospital by another officer for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury. The suspect was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury.

Based on information learned in the investigation at this time, officers believe the suspect in this incident was also involved in an incident at the Safeway, located at 1010 Southwest Jefferson Street, at 4:23 p.m., this afternoon. During that incident, the suspect reportedly punched a security guard at the location after the security gaurd contacted the suspect for shoplifting several items.

The suspect's identity and charges will be provided after he is released from the hospital and lodged at the Multnomah County Jail.

Anyone with information about the incident at Southwest 17th Avenue and Southwest Taylor Street or at Safeway should contact the Portland Police Bureau non-emergency line at 503-823-3333.
