Natural Cover Fire - 1200 Block of NE Walnut - 7-3-18

Roseburg Fire Department - 07/03/18

On July 3rd, 2018 at 3:30 p.m., Roseburg Fire Department personnel responded to the 1200 block of NE Walnut Street in Roseburg on report of a small brush and grass fire beside the street.  As they arrived, the fire grew and caused damage to a nearby power pole, but firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, halting the spread to a nearby building.
Roseburg Police officers contacted an individual in the area, who admitted to flicking a discarded cigarette into the bushes, causing the fire.  The Roseburg Fire Department would like to remind everyone to use extreme causing when disposing of smoking materials or any other potential sources of ignition.  With higher temperatures and lower humidity, grass, bushes, and dry bark mulch can be instantly ignited by discarded smoking materials, or can smolder for hours before bursting into flames and causing devastating fires.
