Washington Co. Sheriff's Office - 01/01/19

On Tuesday, January 1, 2019, at 12:06 a.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies serving the City of Cornelius responded to a report of someone recklessly shooting a firearm.

A resident in the 300 block of South Dogwood Place reported that shortly after midnight there were many gunshots heard from the neighbor’s back yard behind their house. The resident reported their house was then struck by the third barrage of gunshots. Deputies located several bullets that penetrated the rear exterior wall of the house with at least two bullets entering the home. One of the bullets landed next to a child’s slide in the living room. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

Deputies arrived and located the house in the 200 block of South Cherry Drive where the gunfire originated. Deputies found several dozen empty handgun shell casings in the front and back yard. The residents were reportedly celebrating the New Year by having a large party and firing handguns in the air within the city limits.

Deputies seized a handgun and arrested 46-year-old Juan Humberto Garfias-Campos of Cornelius. He was lodged in the Washington County Jail, charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Recklessly Endangering another Person and Second Degree Criminal Mischief. He was held on $10,000 bail. There is the possibility of additional charges as the investigation continues.
