Man arrested for eluding police, pipe bomb located in vehicle

Eugene Police Department

At 10:39 p.m. on December 3, two officers went to an apartment in the 2700 block of Willakenzie Road to contact 43-year-old Melvin David Bennett as there was probable cause to arrest him for felony Elude. Bennett is suspected of fleeing an EPD traffic stop at 7th Avenue and Lincoln Street. Multiple agencies had attempted to locate the vehicle after it left Eugene, but it was not located.

When officers arrived at Bennett’s apartment on December 3, they observed Bennett sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle and positioned to prevent him eluding. He was detained without incident. Bennett had warrants and there was a device in the vehicle. A member of the Metro Explosives Disposal Unit arrived and investigated the device, advising it was a pipe bomb. MEDU seized the device and Bennett was transported to Lane County Jail and lodged on two warrants, Elude (case 25-18107), and Unlawful Possession of a Destructive Device (case 2519642).
