Suspect in Custody After Early Morning Stabbing in Deschutes River Woods

Deschutes Co. Sheriff's Office - 04/27/18

On April 27, 2018 at about 1:11am, deputies with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an address in the 19300 block of Kiowa Road, south of Bend, regarding a stabbing that had just occurred.  The 39 year old female caller told Deschutes County 911 dispatchers she and possibly one other person at the location had been stabbed.  The suspect, 43 year old Marcus S. Steel of Bend, was the female caller’s ex-boyfriend and she reported he had left the scene on foot.

Deputies, Oregon State Police troopers, and City of Bend police officers responded to the area and set up a perimeter around the area.  An Emergency Phone Network broadcast, or EPN, was sent out to residences in the area alerting them to the police activity and asking residents to secure their homes and report any sightings to 911.  Steel was not immediately located during the search.

An investigation at the scene determined Steel arrived at the residence to talk to the 39 year old female victim.  A physical dispute quickly ensued inside the living quarters and during that dispute, both the 39 year old female and 22 year old male were stabbed.

The 39 year old female victim was transported by a Bend Fire Department ground ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for serious injuries.  The 22 year old male victim was transported by a friend to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, also with serious injuries.

At about 5:30 am this morning, Marcus S. Steel was located after he entered the backyard of a nearby residence.  The property owner and his two dogs held the suspect in the yard until deputies arrived and took him into custody.  Steel was transported by a Bend Fire Department ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for serious injuries.  Steel’s injuries are believed to have occurred after the dispute at the victim’s residence and before entering the backyard of the nearby residence this morning.  Deputies took Steel into custody without incident.

Steel is currently in the custody of deputies and receiving medical care at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.

This investigation is still ongoing.
