Oakland Man Arrested following Disturbance, Pursuit

Douglas Co. Sheriff's Office - 07/05/18 

OAKLAND, OR – At 9:00 pm, on Wednesday, July 4, 2018, deputies were called to a residence in the 100-block of Goodrich Highway for a reported domestic disturbance. Deputies learned an involved male, 45 year-old Michael Ray Powell of Oakland, was armed with a firearm.
At approximately 10:24 pm, Powell left the property in a vehicle. Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however Powell attempted to flee. At one point, Powell drove back toward pursuing deputies. One deputy discharged his firearm, which did not strike Powell. Powell then drove back to the property where the incident continued. Powell was eventually taken into custody by deputies and lodged at the Douglas County Jail on charges of:
  • Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants
  • Attempt to Elude Police Officer – Vehicle
  • Recklessly Endangering Another Person
  • Reckless Driving
  • Attempt to Commit Assault
During the course of the incident, Powell’s wife, 41 year-old Shakota Ann Powell, was taken into custody for Interfering With a Police Officer.  
The Sheriff’s Office has asked the Oregon State Police to investigate the officer involved shooting.  The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave as a procedural matter. No one was injured during the course of the incident.
