Fire Destroys Auto Body Shop in Forest Grove

Forest Grove Fire & Rescue - 09/08/18

Just after 12:30pm on Saturday September 8th, Forest Grove Firefighters were dispatched to a reported commercial fire in the 1800 block of C Street. While firefighters were walking to the apparatus in the station, they saw a large column of smoke and requested a full 1st Alarm response (indicated a confirmed fire). Minutes later they arrived to find an auto repair shop fully engulfed with flames. Crews attacked the flames from the exterior due to unsafe conditions, which included a collapsed roof. An additional ladder truck was brought to the scene to join a ladder truck already on scene to fight the flames safely from the air. It took firefighters approximately 45 minutes after arrival to knock down the flames and consider the fire under control.

Firefighters were hampered on scene by two situations. The first were live power lines that were burned and fell to the ground, which firefighters had to avoid until deemed safe. The second was a broken water line in the front of the building, the flowing water created a sink hole that was at 3 feet wide and possibly 4 or more feet deep. Because of this, firefighters were not able to get close to the front of the structure due to unknown underground sink holes that could have been created because of this.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The building and it's contents, including two vehicles being worked on, are considered a total loss. No civilians or firefighters were injured on scene.

Forest Grove Fire & Rescue was assisted on scene by Cornelius Fire Department, Gaston Fire District, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue, Forest Grove Police, Washington County Sheriffs Office as well as Forest Grove Public Works and Forest Grove Light & Power.
