Pickup Collided with ODOT Truck on I-5

9/12/22, 22:03 hrs. (NORTH GRANTS PASS) -- An Oregon Department of Transportation crew working on Interstate 5 Northbound at milepost 59 narrowly escaped injury last night, after a crash that was initially reported to 911 by nearby residents as an "explosion".  Rescue teams from Rural Metro Fire, Grants Pass Fire Rescue and AMR-Josephine County converged on the scene to find the driver of a mangled pickup truck, that had rear-ended the ODOT truck, requiring extrication.  Once removed, the driver was transported to the hospital with what appeared to be non life-threatening injuries.  Oregon State Police is investigating the cause of the crash.

This crash highlights a stark reality of the hazards faced by all crews working on the roadside, and what can lead to a worst case scenario when such a crash occurs.  Fatalities are highly possible.

Motorists in Oregon are reminded to observe ORS 811.147 that requires moving over or slowing considerably, when approaching stopped vehicles displaying emergency or warning lights.

The life you save....may be ours.
