EXCHANGE OF GUNFIRE WITH OFFICERS ENDS WITH TWO IN CUSTODY

Salem, Ore. — At approximately 6:52 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2022, gun shots were exchanged between a Salem Police officer and adult males who had run from a stolen vehicle. No officers or suspects were injured.  

At approximately 6:26 pm a woman reported two males had attempted to rob her of her vehicle in the area of 17th St SE and Hines St SE. The victim also reported she believed one of the males was armed. 

While investigating the attempted carjacking, officers spotted a stolen vehicle in the area of 18th St NE and Center St NE, which was taken in a previous carjacking. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled. The vehicle eventually stopped, and three occupants fled on foot. 

A Salem police officer chased after the suspects and was involved in an exchange of gunfire at 14th St NE and B St NE. Two adult males were taken into custody and a handgun was located at the scene. Officers searched the area for the third person using a K9, however they were not located. 

The names of the involved officer and the two adult males in custody will not be released at this time. 

The Marion County Law Enforcement Officer Deadly Use of Force Plan under Senate Bill 111 has been initiated for this incident, and Oregon State Police will be conducting the primary investigation. The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave per department policy. 

Additionally, per the force plan protocol, no further information will be released by the Salem Police Department. All future case updates will be provided by the Oregon State Police. Any media inquiries should be directed to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office
