Two-vehicle Crash Results in Fatality on US-97 near Milepost 132 in Deschutes County Update - Names Released*

On Sunday, March 25, 2018 at approximately 3:30AM, the Oregon State Police responded to a two vehicle, head on crash, on US-97 near milepost 132 which is approximately two miles north of Bend. Preliminary investigation shows a 2005 Ford Explorer operated by Megan Rose HANDFORD (19) of Bend, Oregon was traveling southbound when it was struck head on in the southbound lane by a 2017 GMC truck operated by Justin David DICE (39) of Bend, Oregon traveling northbound. DICE was determined to be deceased on scene and HANDFORD was transported via air ambulance to St. Charles in Bend with life threatening injuries and is reported to have undergone surgery. Both vehicles were only occupied by the drivers.

The Oregon State Police were assisted by the Bend Fire Department, Deschutes County Medical Examiner, Deschutes County District Attorney's Office and ODOT. Speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in the crash. This investigation is ongoing and no additional information is available.
