I-5 MP 102 Fires

DFPA

At approximately 11:20 AM Friday morning, crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Canyonville – South Umpqua Rural Fire Department, and Tri-City Rural Fire Department responded to a grass fire that was reported near I-5 Milepost 102 southbound. While enroute to the incident, two additional fires were reported near exit 101 southbound and near milepost 100.5 southbound.  A quick and aggressive initial attack by firefighters stopped the forward spread of all three fires at a combined total of about one acre of grass and brush. Firefighters remained on scene until 1:30 PM, mopping up hot spots and securing control lines.

While the specific cause of the I-5 Milepost 102 Fires remains under investigation, a preliminary fire investigation has indicated that the cause of all three fires is most likely vehicle related.

Firefighters were assisted on scene by personnel and equipment from the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians.
