JUVENILE ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH SECOND DEGREE MURDER

Gresham, Ore.— On the morning of May 31, East Metro SWAT and PPB SERT served search warrants at two separate locations in the area of SE 190^th Ave. and SE Clinton St. The search warrants were related to the ongoing East County Major Crimes Team (MCT) investigation into the May 18 homicide of Leonard Madden at SE 190^th Ave. and SE Yamhill St.

Just prior to service of the search warrants, law enforcement received a report about a named 16-year-old male suspect in the homicide investigation who was possibly planning to bring a firearm to Centennial High School (CHS). The CHS School Resource Officer immediately started investigating that report. Law Enforcement resources followed a vehicle away from one of the search warrant locations, which had stopped and picked up the homicide suspect. 

Members of the MCT, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit, and East Metro SWAT followed the car and stopped it as it entered the driveway of David Douglas High School. Four subjects, including the homicide suspect, were contacted in the car and complied with officers during the stop. Inside the vehicle, investigators observed a handgun in plain view.

The suspect was transported to the Gresham Police Department and the vehicle was impounded for further investigation. The other three occupants of the car were ultimately released from the scene.

Later that day, it was determined the threat to CHS was not credible, however the correlation between the CHS report and the possession of the firearm are still under investigation.

The 16-year-old male was lodged at the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center, accused of Murder in the Second Degree, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon related to the death of Leonard Madden. 

Gresham Police Chief Travis Gullberg stated, “We empathize with the trauma our community is experiencing because of continued gun violence. The Gresham Police Department is committed to tirelessly working on this issue and addressing the root causes. We are thankful for our strong community partnerships with other law enforcement agencies and social resources as we strive to put an end to the violence.”

Due to privacy laws surrounding juveniles, no further information is available about the suspect or the investigation.
