Shooting on Cape Arago Highway, One Dead

Police are investigating a shooting that took place at about 8:33 AM this morning. Coos County 911 Center received two 911 calls indicating a woman was “down” outside the residence located 92616 Cape Arago Highway in the unincorporated area of Coos County. Medical and law enforcement personnel responded to the scene. At the scene, the officers found lying adjacent to Cape Arago Highway 34 year old Coos Bay resident Amber Townsend. The officers found she had been shot multiple times with what appears to have been a shotgun. She was transported to Bay Area Hospital where she was declared deceased.
 
At this time law enforcement believes that she was walking on Cape Arago Highway when she was shot. They believe she was walking in the direction of Charleston when she was shot. The mode of travel used by her assailant is not known. The direction of travel used by her assailant before and after the shooting is not known. There are no suspects or persons of interest reported at this time.

Law Enforcement is asking for the public’s assistance. They are requesting that anyone who was traveling on Cape Arago Highway between the Sunset Market and the American Market (formerly known as the Lighthouse Market) between the hours of 8:15 AM and 8:45 AM today to contact the Coos County Sheriff’s Office. R. Paul Frasier says they are especially interested in speaking with persons driving in the area at the above times who have video camera footage showing their drive through the area. Even if you do not think you saw anything, they would like to speak with you.  
 
The Coos County Major Crime Team has been activated with the Coos County Sheriff’s Office as the lead agency. Officers from the Sheriff’s Office, Coos Bay Police, Oregon State Police, Confederated Tribal Police, Oregon State Police, SCINT, Bandon Police Department, the Medical Examiner’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office have responded are actively working the case at this time.
