** UPDATE ** 4 ARRESTED AFTER DCSO STREET CRIMES UNIT LOCATES AN ACTIVE CLANDESTINE LAB DURING SEARCH WARRANT

Deschutes Co. Sheriff's Office

On February 8^th, 2023, at approximately 8:00 AM, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes Unit, in collaboration with the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team and the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, executed a search warrant on the 1400 block of NE Tucson Way within the city of Bend. This home is a duplex with shared walls in a residential area.

This home and the occupants were the subjects of a long-term controlled substance investigation.

Deschutes County Sheriff SWAT Team members entered the home and encountered three adults. Unexpectedly, the SWAT Team also discovered an active clandestine lab alleged to extract Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) was located on the property. Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is the prototypical indolethylamine hallucinogen.

Illicit DMT labs can require various volatile, highly flammable liquid hydrocarbon mixtures. These DMT processing labs also use Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), commonly known as lye. This combination can cause fires, explosions, and chemical burns.

Although N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a naturally occurring substance in many species of plants, it remains a Schedule I controlled substance and unlawful to manufacture and distribute DMT, in any form.

The Oregon State Police Clandestine Lab Team, Oregon Health Authority, and the Oregon DEQ responded to the scene and assisted investigators in safely deactivating, dismantling, and decontaminating the clandestine lab. DEQ will follow up with the homeowner to complete the decontamination process.

Investigators located processed DMT distillate and other evidence of distribution.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the following people were arrested and lodged in the Deschutes County Sheriff's Jail;

Matthew C Carroll, age 34, of Bend, Oregon
