FATAL CRASH -- INTERSTATE 5 -- DOUGLAS COUNTY

Oregon State Police On Saturday, April 6, 2024, at approximately 2 p.m., Oregon State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on I-5 southbound near milepost 125 in Douglas County.  The preliminary investigation indicated that a blue Chevrolet S-10 was traveling southbound when an object flew out of the back of the truck bed. The driver, Evan Nile Cookman (70) of Winston, pulled onto the right shoulder and exited the vehicle. While attempting to retrieve the object from the interstate, he fell into the left lane of traffic. A black Ford F-550 traveling in the left lane attempted to avoid the subject (Cookman); however, was unable to avoid a collision and struck Cookman.  Cookman was pronounced deceased at the scene.  OSP was assisted by the Roseburg Fire Department, Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.                   Click Here To Download Our App

FATAL CRASH -- HWY. 38 -- DOUGLAS COUNTY

Oregon State Police On Saturday, April 6, 2024, at approximately 5:26 p.m., Oregon State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Hwy. 38 near milepost 30.5 in Douglas County.  The preliminary investigation indicated that a black Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling eastbound when the operator lost control while negotiating a curve. The motorcycle struck the guardrail before coming to an uncontrolled rest in the westbound lane of travel. Multiple motorists stopped and rendered first aid prior to the arrival of emergency services.  The motorcycle operator, Christopher Rein Schuerger (40) of Springfield, was pronounced deceased at the scene despite life-saving measures by a responding trooper and good Samaritans.  Speed and wet roadway conditions contributed to the crash.  OSP was assisted by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office, North Douglas Ambulance, Elkton Fire Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES RESPOND TO SHOOTING NEAR LASSEN LANE

Lane Co. Sheriff's Office On April 6 th  at about 3:30 a.m., deputies and a Junction City Police officer responded to the area of Lassen Lane and River Road for a report of a gunshot wound.  One person was injured and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The suspects fled immediately after the shooting, which appeared to be a targeted attack by individuals known to each other, and are still outstanding.   Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Lane County Sheriff’s Office at 541-682-4150, option 1.                    Click Here To Download Our App

FATAL RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE FIRE - 737 W. WHARTON STREET

Roseburg Fire Dept. At 7:53 p.m. on April 5, 2024, Roseburg Fire Department personnel responded to a residential structure fire with a known rescue at 737 W. Wharton Street.  Firefighters arrived on scene to find a single-family residential structure with heavy fire and smoke coming from the left, front corner of the home with smoke alarms sounding. Upon arrival, a female resident informed fire crews that her husband was still inside the structure near the front of the home. Fire crews entered the single-family residence in rescue mode. Crews were able to quickly locate the seventy-one year old male resident near the front of the home and found him to be unconscious.  Crews quickly removed the victim through the front door of the home.  The patient was transported to a nearby hospital, where the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.  Crews extinguished the fire and completed overhaul of the structure.  The single-family residence sustained structural, smoke, and

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO SEIZURE OF FENTANYL AND METH - DOUGLAS COUNTY

Oregon State Police A recent traffic stop on Interstate 5 near Roseburg led to the seizure of large quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl headed for the streets of Portland.    On April 1, 2024, just after 9 a.m. an Oregon State Trooper stopped a black Chevrolet sedan near milepost 149 on I-5 north for a traffic violation. The trooper suspected criminal activity and received consent to search the vehicle.    During the search, the trooper located 62 pounds of methamphetamine and 22,000 suspected fentanyl laced pills inside the vehicle. The suspect acknowledged the illegal substances were headed to Portland.    Due to the large quantify of substances seized, the suspect, Oliver Raul Alvarez Beltran (21) of Phoenix (AZ), was arrested and federally charged with attempted delivery of a controlled substance.    The investigation is on-going and no additional information is available for release at this time.                                     Click Here To Download Our App

WINSTON WOMAN ARRESTED FOR ANIMAL ABUSE AND NEGLECT

Douglas Co. Sheriff's Office Winston woman has been arrested on charges of animal abuse and neglect. Douglas County Sheriff's Office Animal Control deputies began an investigation early this week after receiving a tip of a horse that was reported to be mistreated at a property in the 600-block of Longhorn Lane. During the investigation, deputies learned the horse and property owner had no connection. Deputies discovered a 3-year-old mixed breed horse, named Ace, who was found to be severely malnourished and in neglectful conditions. Ace's owner, 24-year-old Morgan Faith Fowler of Winston, surrendered the horse to deputies on Wednesday who took it to a veterinary hospital for examination and later to Strawberry Mountain Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. Overnight, Ace's condition declined to the point that euthanasia was necessary for humane care. Kelly Estella O’Brien was last seen at the Super 8 Motel in Redmond on April 4 th , 2024, at approximately 3:40 pm. O’Brien was last seen wearing a green jacket and tan ball cap. FATAL CRASH - INTERSTATE 5 - DOUGLAS COUNTY

Oregon State Police On Thursday, April 4, 2024, at 3:00 a.m., Oregon State Police responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash on Interstate 5, near milepost 99, in Douglas County. The preliminary investigation indicated a pedestrian, Sally Kaye Bidlake (82) of Canyonville, was kneeling in the slow lane when she was struck by a northbound Toyota Sienna, operated by Miguel Santos (54) of San Mateo (CA).  The pedestrian (Bidlake) was declared deceased at the scene. The operator (Santos) and passengers in the Toyota were not injured. The highway was not impacted during the on-scene investigation. The cause of the crash is under investigation. FIRE DAMAGES HOUSE IN FOREST GROVE

Forest Grove Fire & Rescue At 6:24 am on Friday April 5th, Forest Grove Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a reported house fire in the 2700 block of 15th Avenue. Initial reports were from a neighbor that stated there was smoke coming from the chimney and roof line of the house. Firefighters arrived minutes later and found a single story house with large amounts of smoke coming from the roof line and vents. Fire crews made access into the house and began to search for the fire, it was originally believed to be confined to the attic space. Upon further searching, firefighters found the majority of the fire burning under the home.  Due to the fire burning under the house, it had weakened the flooring. At one point, a firefighter fell through the floor which prompted the transmission of a Mayday over the radio per policy. FATAL VEHICLE CRASH ON CLEAR LAKE ROAD

Lane Co. Sheriff's Office On the afternoon of April 3rd, Deputies with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office responded with fire personnel to a report of a single vehicle crash into trees along Clear Lake Road near Goodman Road, west of Eugene. The vehicle was observed driving at a high rate of speed before it left the roadway for an unknown reason and crashed. PPB OFFICERS STOP STABBING ASSAULT IN PROGRESS, SUSPECT BOOKED ON CHARGES

Portland Police Bureau A suspect in a stabbing involving two victims in the Mill Park Neighborhood is facing felony assault and other charges after a domestic violence investigation. On Thursday, April 4, 2024 at 12:10a.m., a 911 call taker from the Bureau of Emergency Communication received a call from an apartment in the 1900 block of Southeast 122nd Avenue where sounds of a disturbance were heard. A minute later another caller indicated that someone had been stabbed and the suspect was still there. Numerous officers were dispatched and began arriving within 5 minutes. The officers approached the apartment and could hear the disturbance still underway and through the open front door could see the suspect standing over a victim. The officers challenged the suspect, who immediately turned his attention away from the victim and toward the police. EARLY EVENING HOUSE FIRE

Sweet Home Fire Dist. On April 2nd at approximately 6:25 pm Sweet Home Fire District crews were dispatched to a home on Wiley Creek Dr for a reported house fire. The first arriving chief officer found heavy smoke coming from the eves of the double wide manufactured home. The fire grew rapidly and spread throughout the structure due to wind and heavy fire load. The first arriving engine attacked the blaze from two sides of the structure trying to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby travel trailer and adjacent carport. A second alarm was quickly called bringing an engine and water tender from Brownsville Rural Fire District; two engines, a medic unit and a chief officer responded from Lebanon Fire District to assist at the fire and to cover the city. MISSING NEWBERG WOMAN FOUND DECEASED

Newberg-Dundee Police Dept. Carolyn Duncan (43 y/o) was reported missing from her Newberg residence on Sunday, March 31’st.  After interviewing people close to Ms. Duncan and finding her absence to be out of character, the Newberg-Dundee Police Department opened a missing person investigation. In an effort to locate Ms. Duncan or find clues to her whereabouts, NDPD conducted searches of her residence and neighborhood. This led to a broader search, on April 3 rd , of the Chehalem Creek area, south of W. 5 th  St., in Newberg, with the assistance of the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office Search & Rescue team. This area is in close proximity to Ms. Duncan’s residence and may have been an area she would hike through. Sadly, the search operation located Ms. Duncan deceased in the creek area behind the property she was residing at. An exact cause of death has not been determined and is still under investigation. REDMOND POLICE ARREST REDMOND RESIDENT FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

Redmond Police Dept. REDMOND, OR – On, Thursday, March 28, 2024, the Redmond Police Department (RPD) arrested 40-year-old Redmond resident Justin Copeland on charges of Online Sexual Corruption of a Child and Encouraging Child Sex Abuse.    Acting on information received from an out of state law enforcement agency, detectives and officers executed a search warrant on Copeland’s residence and took him into custody without incident.    Evidence collected during the investigation and search of Copeland’s residence has raised concern regarding Copeland having contact or attempted contacts with children in the Redmond area. Anyone with information about Copeland or the investigation is urged to contact Detective Ben Halsey at RPD at 541-504-3475. The case is active and has been referred to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office. STABBING INVESTIGATION

Roseburg Police Dept. On April 3, 2024 at approximately 6:00 AM, the Roseburg Police Department responded to the 900 block of NE Willow Street regarding a reported stabbing. When officers arrived, they found a 50 year old Roseburg man was injured due to a stab wound and immediately began life-saving efforts. The injured male was transported to Mercy Medical Center, then later transferred out of the area for additional treatment.  A suspect in this case, a 20 year old Roseburg man, fled the scene and has not been located despite efforts from multiple assisting agencies and a DCSO K9 track; investigators found the victim and suspect are known to each other. Roseburg Police detectives, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office detectives, DCSO deputies and Oregon State Police responded to assist and will continue to investigate the matter with assistance from the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office. At this time, there is no known ongoing threat to the general public.                   Click

SKIER RESCUED BY DOUGLAS COUNTY SEARCH & RESCUE ON EASTER

Douglas Co. Sheriff's Office DIAMOND LAKE, Ore.  - A cross country skier was rescued after falling and injuring her ankle Sunday afternoon. On Sunday, March 31, 2024, at approximately 1:30 p.m. Douglas County 9-1-1 dispatchers received a report of a 57 year old woman who fell and injured her ankle while cross country skiing near Mt. Thielsen with her companion. The victim was unable to bear weight on the injured leg and requested assistance. Deputies activated the Douglas County Search & Rescue team who responded to the area along with volunteers from Diamond Lake Resort. Searchers used snowshoes to hike the four miles into the base of a tree line where they located the victim, Trina Reiter of Eugene and her companion just before 7:45 p.m. Searchers stabilized Reiter's injury, placed her in a litter and transported her back to the trailhead.
