Three Eugene Police officers injured during response to university area Mother’s Day party

Eugene Police Department Three Eugene Police officers were injured after being assaulted responding to an unruly gathering comprised of college-age individuals and some of their parents attending a party hosted at a frequent loud party location, 1376 Ferry Street. The EPD responded to a complaint by the public of a loud party at the residence around 10 p.m. on May 7. A resident advised they were hosting the party in honor of Mother’s Day. Some of the students and their moms were upset about their party being shut down. However, the investigating officer spoke with several who were understanding. The residents were cooperative with officers and the while the party was dispersing, the officers gently reminded several people about the open container law. They were not cited in order to gain voluntary compliance. As the crowd went outside, some college-age adults and their mothers began taking photos in front of the police car including several people displaying their middle fingers.   The

IN-CUSTODY DEATH INVESTIGATION

Douglas Co. Sheriff's Office ROSEBURG, Ore.  - The Douglas County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating an in-custody death after an adult in custody (AIC) was found unresponsive in their cell Saturday night at the Douglas County Jail. On Saturday, May 7, 2022, shortly before 9:00pm, deputies called for an ambulance for an unresponsive 56-year-old male in the intake center of the facility. Facility staff attempted lifesaving efforts until the arrival of the ambulance. Paramedics continued efforts to revive the AIC, identified as 56-year-old Darin McCafferty of Elk Grove California, which were unsuccessful. Mr. McCafferty was declared deceased and his next of kin was notified. "On behalf of Sheriff John Hanlin and his staff, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office extends its sincere sympathies to the family of Mr. McCafferty during this difficult time," Lt. Brad O'Dell said. TRAVEL TRAILER FIRE - 581 NE ALAMEDA AVENUE, #7 - 5-7-22

Roseburg Fire Dept. At 7:49 p.m. on May 7, 2022, the Roseburg Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 581 NE Alameda Avenue, #7.  The fire was reported by nearby residents of the Alameda Avenue Trailer Park.    Firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy smoke and flames showing from a 1996 Sandpiper travel trailer that was parked inside the Alameda Avenue Trailer Park.  Upon investigation, firefighters found a fully involved travel trailer that was threatening nearby structures.   Firefighters extinguished the fire while stopping the fire from spreading to nearby structures and other trailers inside the park.  The resident was not home at the time of the fire.  One dog was able to exit the trailer after nearby neighbors opened the back door of the trailer. A total of 10 firefighters assisted with firefighting operations. Other agencies assisting with the fire included Pacific Power, Roseburg Police Department, and Umpqua Valley Ambulance. O'ACES ROBBERY SUSPECT AT LARGE IN GRANTS PASS

Grants Pass Police Department Grants Pass, Ore. – This afternoon at 12:19 pm, Grants Pass Police responded to the O’Aces on Williams Hwy regarding a robbery of the business with a shot having been fired. Arriving officers discovered a white male adult wearing all dark clothing and gloves had entered the business and demanded money as he pointed a handgun at the clerk. For an unknown reason, the suspect fired one round from the handgun that did not strike the clerk. The suspect then took cash and fled the scene on foot in a westward direction. There were no injuries as a result of the robbery. Officers immediately set a perimeter, placed the nearby Allen Dale Middle School on lockdown, and began a K9 search for the suspect. It was determined the suspect had fled the area and was moving away from the middle school, but he was not apprehended. Sheriff's Office 19 year old William Robert Henry Vaughn was last seen at approximately 1:00am this morning near the Lowell covered bridge.  He was separated from his group and did not return home. He was last believed to be walking westbound on Hwy. 58.  Vaughn is described as a white male adult standing approximately 5’09” to 5’10”.  He weighs about 140lbs and has brown curly hair and hazel eyes.  Vaughn was last seen wearing a high visibility hooded sweatshirt and jeans.  Anyone with information regarding Vaughn’s whereabouts are asked to contact the Lane County Sheriff’s Office at 541-682-4150 opt. 1. 

FATAL HIT AND RUN CRASH-DOUGLAS COUNTY

Oregon State Police On Friday, May 6, 2022,  at approximately 3:00 AM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash on Interstate 5 southbound near milepost 97.  Preliminary investigation revealed a southbound vehicle struck a pedestrian, identified as Jeremy Blondell (45) of Wolf Creek, as he was walking on the freeway.  Blondell sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.  The operator of the vehicle did not stop, and the case is being investigated as a hit and run. Investigators believe it to be a commercial motor vehicle or a large RV due to roadway evidence. OSP investigators are seeking public assistance in locating the vehicle. DECEASED MALE RECOVERED FROM ROGUE RIVER IN GRANTS PASS

Grants Pass Police Department Grants Pass, Ore. – This morning at 9:16 am, Grants Pass Police and Grants Pass Fire Rescue responded to Reinhart Volunteer Park regarding the report of a body floating in the Rogue River. A short time later units recovered the deceased body of a 63-year-old Grants Pass male just upstream from the pedestrian bridge. Grants Pass Detectives responded to the scene and found no signs of foul play. The family of the deceased has been notified. The Grants Pass Police Department would like to thank the citizens who assisted with this investigation. Homicide Investigation Josephine County

Josephine Co. Sheriff's Office On Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at approximately 10:27 PM, Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Troopers from Oregon State Police along with AMR and Rural Metro Fire Department personnel responded to the 100 block of Ward Road in Merlin, Oregon for a report of a shooting. Once on scene deputies found a male in the driveway with an apparent gunshot wound. CPR was administered first by deputies then by medical personnel. The male succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Sheriff’s Office Detectives were assisted by Detectives from the Oregon State Police, Grants Pass Police Department and personnel from the Oregon State Police Crime Lab.  Investigators believe this is an isolated incident and at no time was there a perceived threat to the community in relation to this incident.  This case is still under investigation and further details are not currently available.   

DEPUTIES INVESTIGATING ASSAULT, SEEKING WITNESSES

Douglas Co. Sheriff's Office ROSEBURG, Ore.  - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an assault that occurred on Sunday near the 7000-block of Melqua Road and is asking for assistance in solving it. On Sunday, May 1, 2022, shortly before 5:00 am, deputies were advised of a man in the emergency department at Mercy Medical Center who had reportedly been assaulted. The 25-year-old victim, Bryce Thomas Watson of Winston, sustained injuries during the incident and was later transported to a Portland area hospital for further treatment. Deputies learned the incident occurred in an area commonly referred to as Long's Ranch located in the 7000-block of Melqua Road and there were witnesses to the incident. Deputies are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have information to contact the Sheriff's Office at (541) 440-4471 and reference Case #22-1837. The incident remains under investigation.

Shooting in Shady Cove Area, Victim in Stable Condition, Suspect in Custody

Jackson County Sheriff's Office JCSO Case 22-2380 SHADY COVE, Ore. – Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) detectives are investigating a shooting that occurred last night in the Shady Cove area. At approximately 5:15 p.m. a woman with a gunshot wound flagged down a Jackson County Fire District 4 (JCFD4) fire truck. JCFD4 began rendering first aid and a Mercy Flights ambulance took her to a local hospital. The woman reported being shot at the 1500 block of Highway 227 in Trail, Ore. JCSO deputies responded to the property and contacted the uninvolved owner. The shooting suspect was identified and taken into custody. The suspect, Robert Carl Baker, 34, of Trail, was lodged at the Jackson County Jail. He is charged with first-degree assault, two counts of menacing, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of reckless endangering. His bail is set at $135,000. The case is under investigation.

SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATION UNDERWAY NEAR MUNRA POINT

Multnomah Co. Sheriff's Office At 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 2, dispatchers received a call from a person located at the Bonneville Dam who spotted smoke from a signal fire near the top of a steep, rocky cliffside. The caller said they had access to a scope saw what appeared to be a hiker in distress. Multnomah County sheriffs’ deputies responded to the location to verify the report. Using binoculars, deputies confirmed the sighting and activated the  Multnomah County Search and Rescue (MCSOSAR)  members. Because of the precarious location of the hiker, the Sheriff’s Office also dispatched the Hood River Crag Rats, a highly-skilled mountain rescue team. Around 1 p.m., two hasty teams with members from MCSOSAR and Crag Rats left the trailhead to attempt to contact the stranded hiker and determine the safest rescue option. FATAL CRASH ON HWY 20-LINCOLN COUNTY

Oregon State Police On Saturday, April 30th, 2022 at approximately 5:35 PM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 20 near milepost 29. A preliminary investigation revealed an eastbound white GMC Sierra, operated by Devon Negathon (52) of South Beach, crossed over the center line and crashed head-on with a westbound gray Toyota Tacoma, operated by Curtis Preston (53) of Toledo.  Negathon sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. His passenger, Cheryl Anne Ballas (32) of Newport, was transported to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Corvallis with serious injuries. Preston was extricated and transported to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Corvallis with serious injuries. Highway 20 was reduced to one lane for approximately four hours.  OSP was assisted by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Toledo Fire and Rescue, Philomath Fire Department and ODOT Incident Response.

JUVENILE JUSTICE CENTER DISTURBANCE

Grants Pass Police Department On Sunday, May 1st, 2022, at approximately 6:45 pm,  the Grants Pass Police Department received a phone call from a Josephine County Juvenile Justice Center (JJC) employee. The employee reported a male juvenile being housed on the detention side of the facility just assaulted one of the other juveniles housed at the facility. The male juvenile refused when ordered to get onto the floor or return to his cell. The situation escalated quickly, with other housed youths joined in open defiance to JJC staff.  Within moments of the original call to the Police Department, two male and one female resident of JJC began destroying the common area of the secured side of the facility. The youths pushed items against the doors leading into the secured area to prevent law enforcement intervention. Every police unit from Grants Pass Police responded to the facility.
