8 Plex Apartment Fire Extinguished by Neighbors

Medford Fire-Rescue - 03/24/18

Medford Fire responded to a structure fire in an apartment at 745 N Riverside Ave this morning just after 9:30 AM. Crews arrived on scene in under 6 minutes and found occupants had extinguished a small room and contents fire with extinguishers. Crews verified the fire was out and assisted with overhaul and smoke removal from the apartment.

Four individuals were assessed on scene for smoke inhalation with one was transported to the hospital for observation by Mercy Flights and another elected to later go by private vehicle.

There were working smoke alarms in the unit which alerted occupants and neighbors to the fire. The quick application of several fire extinguishers prevented the fire from growing and causing more damage to the building. Damage was contained to a single bedroom in the apartment.

The fire was determined to be accidental by DFM Parks who conducted the fire investigation.

The American Red Cross is providing emergency assistance to the victims until it is possible to return to their apartment.

The presence of working smoke alarms and availability of fire extinguishers prevented this fire from being a tragedy. Medford Fire Rescue encourages everyone to have working smoke alarms in their homes and be familiar with how to use fire extinguishers.

4 Medford Fire Engines, 1 Aerial Ladder, 2 Battalion Chiefs, 1 Deputy Fire Marshall, Medford Police Department, American Red Cross all responded to the incident. A total of 18 Fire personnel.
