Motor Vehicle Crash

Deschutes Co. Sheriff's Office - 08/21/18

On Tuesday, 8/21/18, at approximately 1145 hours, deputies with the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a minor injury motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Ward Road and Bear Creek Road east of Bend.  Deputies determined a green Dodge Ram full size pickup being operated by a 15 year old juvenile was traveling northbound on Ward Road and failed to stop for a Gray Toyota Prius, being operated by Patricia Naumann (age 63) of Bend, who was also traveling northbound attempting to make a left turn onto westbound Bear Creek Road.

The juvenile driver attempted to miss the Prius by passing on the left, but did not have sufficient room and impacted the back of the Prius causing the juvenile's pickup to go off the east side of the roadway and impact a power pole just north of this intersection.  The crash caused the pole to be damaged severely enough that Pacific Power and Century Link required the pole to be taken down to prevent it from falling and to assist in the safe removal of the pickup from the scene.  The damage to the pole caused temporary internet outages to potentially 100's of local residents in the area.  The timelines and how long service may be disrupted are currently unknown.

An investigation into the crash determined that the juvenile driver, who had three other juvenile passengers, was following too close causing a lack of time to allow for the Prius to conduct a left hand turn.  The female juvenile driver was issued citations for no operator's license and following too close.  Alcohol, drugs, nor distracted driving are believed to be factors in this crash.
Bend Fire Department responded to the scene and assessed those involved in the crash.  No one required immediate medical attention and no one was transported from the scene for medical need.
