Deschutes Co. Sheriff's Office - 09/21/18

Bend, OR – A Bend man was arrested for Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Pointing a Firearm at Another, Recklessly Endangering and Reckless Driving after a “road rage” incident on Highway 20 W in the Tumalo area of Bend.

On September 20, 2018 at 4:30PM, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to 911 reports of a white Chevrolet Suburban driving eastbound on Highway 20 west at Dayton Rd. Deschutes 911 was told by victims that the driver, Hawkens Mclean Hazelton, age 22 of Bend, Oregon, was pointing a gun at other drivers.

The investigation revealed that Hazelton was driving recklessly on Highway 20 W and began challenging other drivers to fight with hand gestures, physical threats and dangerous driving, all to intimidate the other drivers. At one point during the incident, Hazelton began pointing a 9mm semi-automatic pistol out of the Suburban windows towards another driver. No shots were fired and no injuries were sustained.

A Bend Police Officer located the Hazelton’s Suburban on Highway 20 as he approached Bend. DCSO Deputies and Bend Police Officers stopped the Suburban and conducted a “high risk traffic stop” at Highway 20 and Old Bend Redmond Highway.  Highway 20 W was briefly closed during the stop to protect the motoring public and DCSO Deputies.

Ultimately, Hazelton was arrested for Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Pointing a Firearm at Another, Recklessly Endangering and Reckless Driving. He was later lodged in the Deschutes County Adult Jail with the same charges.

Deschutes County Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted at the scene by Bend Police Department Officers, Oregon State Police Troopers, and Oregon Department of Transportation.
