Officers Arrest Suspect in Monday Night and Tuesday Morning Homicide Investigations
On the evening of Monday, November 19, 2018, Central Precinct officers and detectives with the Portland Police Bureau's Homicide Detail started an investigation regarding the death of an adult female who was located under the Morrison Bridge near Southwest 1st Avenue. At 12:33 a.m., Tuesday, November 20, 2018, Central Precinct officers and detectives with the Homicide Detail responded to the mid-span of the Burnside Bridge to investigate the death of an adult male.
A deputy medical examiner with the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office responded to both crime scenes and presumptively determined both people died as a result of homicidal violence. Based on evidence located at the separate crime scenes, investigators believe both victims suffered gunshot injuries.
As these homicide investigations continued, the Portland Police Bureau assigned additional officers to perform increased patrols in Downtown Portland. At 3:28 a.m., on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, members with the Portland Police Bureau Tactical Operation Division's Special Emergency Reaction Team located a man matching the description of the suspect in the homicide investigation that was occurring on the Burnside Bridge. Special Emergency Reaction Team members located and contacted the man near Southwest 3rd Avenue and Southwest Pine Street. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
Based on information gathered at this time in both the investigations, detectives believe the suspect taken into custody near Southwest 3rd Avenue and Southwest Pine Street this morning is the suspect in the homicide investigation that began under the Morrison Bridge, as well the investigation on the Burnside Bridge.
In addition to being a suspect in the above listed homicide investigations, members of the Portland Police Bureau Detective Division's Robbery Detail believe the suspect was also involved in a robbery at the Chevron Gas Station, located at 400 West Burnside Street. An employee at the Chevron called 9-1-1 on Monday, November 20, 2018, at 10:44 p.m., to report a man entered the location, brandished a firearm, demanded cigarettes, and left the location. There were no reports of anyone being injured during this incident.
The suspect will be identified after which time he is lodged at the Multnomah County Jail.
The identity of the deceased victims will be released after members with the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office complete an autopsy and the victims' next of kin are located and notified.
At this time, the Police Bureau does not believe there is a continued danger posed to the public in connection with these investigations.
