Armed Robbery Arrest

Bend Police Dept. - 12/30/18

On December 29, 2018, at 6:58 PM, Deschutes County 911 received a call from a female asking for help with an emergency at Local Motors.  Bend Police Officers were dispatched and arrived three minutes later.

The Officers encountered a robbery in progress.  There was a suspect in a mask and armed with a hammer who was inside the business.  Local Motors business owners Morgan Matlock, Christina Matlock and a male juvenile were also inside the business and the suspect was demanding money from them.  Christina Matlock and the male juvenile eventually exited the business and were contacted by officers.  The male suspect then exited the business, saw officers on scene and ran north.

Bend Police Officers pursued the suspect on foot and ordered him to stop.  The suspect refused but officers caught him on NE Tweet Place north of NE Yale Avenue.  The suspect had stolen both victim’s cellular phones.  The suspect was identified as Christopher James Grant.

The subsequent investigation revealed Grant entered the business wearing a mask, displaying a badge on his chest and he yelled, “Sheriff”.  Grant is not a police officer in the state of Oregon and was impersonating a police officer at the time.  During the robbery, Grant ordered Christina Matlock to go outside and start her vehicle.  Grant also handcuffed Morgan Matlock during the robbery.  Morgan Matlock suffered minor injuries from the handcuffing.

Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Bend Police Detectives assisted in this investigation.  The investigation is ongoing to determine how Grant obtained the law enforcement items used in these crimes.
