Water Rescue Consortium, Search & Rescue help injured woman on Clackamas River Trail; video available

At 3:20 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2019, the Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium was conducting water rescue training on the Clackamas River between the Indian Henry Campground and the Memaloose Bridge.
During the training, they were flagged down by a passerby and alerted of a medical emergency on the Clackamas River Trail.
The Clackamas River Trail runs along the south shore of the Clackamas River for about 8 miles between Fish Creek and Indian Henry trailheads.
Initial reports were that a woman had fallen and broken her ankle on the trail a short distance up the trail from the Fish Creek Trailhead.
Rescue crews pulled off of the water and headed to the trailhead to assist.
Units from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, Clackamas Fire District #1 and the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol responded to the trailhead. They learned the victim was not a short distance up the trail, but she was about three-and-a-half miles up the trail, near Pup Creek Falls.
Once crew realized how far up the trail it was, Clackamas County Search & Rescue was notified and additional resources were called in. AMR Reach and Treat and Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue deployed to the area to assist.
Two firefighters from Clackamas Fire immediately started hiking up the trail with medical equipment and quickly made it to the woman. arriving at about 5 p.m. They stabilized the injured woman while the other members of the Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium responded to the Sunstrip Campground and launched a raft to ferry more rescuers across the river.
The woman was brought down off of the trail to the river by rescuers and loaded onto the raft. She was then ferried back across the river, carried up to the campground by Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue, and transported by AMR at about 6:15 p.m.
The woman was identified as Rebecca Erickson, 65, of Portland. She told responders she had started hiking around 10:30 a.m. that morning and had fallen near Pup Creek Falls around 2:15 p.m.
Without the Water Rescue Consortium being in the area and having all of the proper training and equipment, this rescue could have taken much longer. All of these agencies working together made this a successful rescue.
The injured woman was treated for her injuries and does not wish to speak with media.
