PPB Officer Struck by Vehicle While Investigating Disturbance-Non-Life Threatening Injuries Sustained

Portland Police Bureau

On Sunday, May 26, 2019 at 2:34 A.M., East Precinct Officers received a report of a disturbance at the Lux Hookah Lounge at 12436 Southeast Powell Boulevard. There was a report of two males fighting, with one threatening to get a gun. Multiple officers responded to the scene and ultimately determined no one had a firearm. Numerous police vehicles were on scene with their overhead emergency lights activated.

As one of the officers was returning to his car on Southeast Powell Boulevard between 124th and 125th Avenues, he saw a Honda Accord traveling westbound on Powell Boulevard toward him. He tucked up against his car trying to avoid being hit, but was struck by the rear view mirror of the passing vehicle. The vehicle did not stop until other officers got behind it at Southeast 122nd Avenue and Southeast Powell Boulevard.

The officer was transported to an area hospital by ambulance. He was treated and released and is recovering at home.

The driver of the vehicle was evaluated for impairment. Carlos F. Zamora, 22 (photo), was arrested and booked at the Multnomah County Detention Center for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver involving Injury, Reckless Driving, and Assault in the Fourth Degree.

"Last night another one of our officers was struck by a vehicle while conducting necessary police work," said Chief Danielle Outlaw. "We are fortunate the officer was not hurt worse or killed. These incidents have become way too common. Driving under the influence of intoxicants is unacceptable behavior and not tolerated in our community."

Drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs injure and kill thousands of people every year. People consuming alcohol or drugs are urged not to get behind the wheel and should have a sober driver or utilize taxis, rideshare companies or transit so everyone is safe on our streets.
