Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Crash with Injuries

Grants Pass Dept. of Public Safety

On 05/27/19 at 0001 hours, GPDPS dispatch received 911 calls of a male subject who had been struck by a vehicle in front of Burger King, located at 501 Rogue River Hwy in Grants Pass. GPDPS Police and Fire/Rescue units responded along with American Medical Response (AMR). On arrival, the male subject was found in the roadway and the vehicle, a 2004 Honda Civic pulled over on the side of the roadway.

The male in the roadway was unresponsive but breathing. He had obvious injuries, was tended to by Fire/Rescue and AMR personnel. The male was later identified as 21 year-old, Tyler Lyons who has a listed Medford address. He was taken to RVMC in Medford with serious but determined non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle, Jeffrey Kime Pelt was cooperative with the investigation and was not impaired by intoxicants. GPDPS Traffic reconstruction specialists and a major crimes detective were summoned to assist with the investigation.

From witness statements and evidence at the scene, it appears Lyons ran out in front of the vehicle Kime Pelt was operating. Alcohol consumption by Lyons appears to be a major factor in this incident. His family was contacted and responded to the Medford area hospital. The roadway was re-opened at about 0151 hours and the investigation is continuing. Kime Pelt was lodged at the Josephine County Jail on an unrelated parole board warrant. This location of the roadway is not an area for pedestrians to cross, it is about 100 yards from marked crosswalks. The Grants Pass Department of Public Safety asks the citizens to please use caution when crossing roadways especially at night and to utilize crosswalks when applicable.
