Truck and Trailer Roll, Spilling 40 Tons of Hot Asphalt

Silverton Fire Dist.

The Silverton Fire District responded at approximately 8:30 am to a reported overturned large semi-truck and trailer just outside of Silverton on Silver Falls Hwy near Quall Rd. On arrival, the incident commander located a semi-truck on its side in the middle of the road and a trailer on its side down an embankment. Both truck and trailer were hauling hot asphalt which spilled onto the road and down the embankment. The total amount of asphalt spilled was approximately 40 tons.

Additionally, about 20 gallons of diesel had spilled onto the roadway.

To reduce the impact on the environment, fire crews worked quickly to contain the diesel and Silverton Public Works and the Truck Company worked together to scoop up the asphalt while it was still to clear the roadway quickly.

The driver of the truck was checked by Fire and Woodburn Ambulance personnel and was transported to the hospital.

As of this writing (11:30 am), the road was still closed as crews work to remove the truck and trailer from the area.

Agencies assisting with the operation are Silverton Fire District, ODOT, Silverton Police, Oregon State Police, Drakes Crossing Fire and Woodburn ambulance.
