Man Arrested After Threats with Chain and Knife

Portland Police Bureau

An adult male suspect is in custody after threatening both police and citizens with weapons in the Northwest District Neighborhood.

Central Precinct officers responded to a report of a man trying to break into the back door of a church in the 100 Block of Northwest 19th Avenue. As officers responded, they were informed that the suspect had a chain and was chasing people with it.

Officers arrived, located the suspect and they saw he was carrying a heavy chain with a padlock (photo). He ran from officers, but then turned around and swung the chain at them. He continued running and additional officers arrived. They caught up with the suspect near West Burnside Street and Northwest 18th Avenue. The suspect produced a knife (photo), grabbed a female passerby, and threatened her with the knife. Officers challenged the suspect and were able to convince him to drop the knife. There was a struggle and an officer utilized a Conducted Electrical Weapon (CEW or Taser) on the suspect. He was arrested.

Detectives are responding to conduct an investigation. The suspect's identity is not being released until he is charged with a crime.
