JOLANE STUDENT FALSELY REPORTS SCHOOL THREAT

Roseburg Police Dept.

On Tuesday, January 28th, 2020, in the afternoon hours, Roseburg Police Department School Resource Officers learned of a potential threat of violence that was targeted at JoLane Middle School in Roseburg.  Officers learned the threat was made over social media, specifically Snapchat.  They immediately started investigating the incident and worked in cooperation with the Roseburg School District.  During the early stages of the investigation it appeared the threat was not credible, but they continued with the investigation.

On Wednesday, January 29th Officers learned the original threat was made by a 13 year old JoLane student over his Snapchat account.  The post by the student indicated a "new student" at the school was going to "shoot up" the school on January 29th.  The 13 year old suspect admitted the report was false, and after posting it they tried to delete it, but it had already been sent and copied by other students/people.

The 13 year old male was detained and lodged at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center on the charge of Disorderly Conduct in the First Degree.

  1. Outstanding job by law enforcement and school officials. I hope they follow through with a trial and if convicted, hand out appropriate punishment. Children today don't get a large enough taste of "consequences", and it shows.
