Suspect Crashes Into Parked Car, Threatens Witnesses With Gun

Portland Police Bureau

A suspect is in custody and a gun is in evidence after a crash investigation in the Lents neighborhood.

On Sunday, February 9, 2020 at 2:06a.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to a call of suspicious circumstances in the 9200 block of Southeast Foster Road. As they responded, the officers received a call from an off duty officer who was in the area and could see a suspect with a gun threatening people. Responding officers learned that the suspect was running away up a pedestrian path nearby. They challenged the suspect at Southeast 96th Avenue and Southeast Harold Street. The subject was not cooperative and began walking away from officers. A K9 was deployed and held the suspect until he could be arrested. Officers recovered a gun nearby (photo).

Officers began an investigation and learned that a vehicle crashed into an unoccupied vehicle in a parking lot, partially landing on the hood of that car (photos). The suspect was seen trying to pull free that car, but was unsuccessful. When he was challenged, he pointed the handgun at witnesses.

Officers booked Shabar U. Johnson, 22, of Portland (photo), into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Menacing. The investigation is continuing to see if other charges are appropriate.

If anyone witnessed the vehicle being driven before, during, or after the crash, please contact the primary investigator, Officer Jason Reando, at jason.reando@portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 20-45614.
