COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE FIRE AND SPRINKLER ACTIVATION - 970 NW VETERANS WAY

Roseburg Fire Dept.

At 5:17 p.m. on October 14, 2022, Roseburg Fire Department personnel responded to a reported commercial structure fire at 970 NW Veterans Way, known as Eagles Landing.  The reporting party notified Douglas County Dispatch that a stove was on fire and that one unit of a commercial duplex was filling with smoke.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a commercial duplex with smoke showing from the front and back door of one unit.  The sprinkler system had activated with water flowing from the structure.  Water was found to be flowing throughout the residence and out the front door of the commercial structure.

The commercial structure had an automatic fire sprinkler system installed. The sprinkler system had activated when exposed to the fire, effectively extinguishing it and preventing the fire from spreading. The fire was contained to the kitchen area of the unit where the fire originated.

Three residents and two dogs were displaced and being assisted by the American Red Cross.  There were no injuries from the fire.   A fire investigator was on scene and the cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.  The commercial duplex suffered water damage throughout both units.

Numerous firefighters from both the Roseburg Fire Department and Douglas County Fire District #2 assisted with the firefighting operations.  Other agencies assisting with the incident included Umpqua Valley Ambulance, Veteran’s Administration Police, American Red Cross, Avista Utilities, and Pacific Power.

This is a great reminder that sprinkler systems can not only save lives but can also reduce damage to property if functioning properly.
