Bend Police arrest shoplifters, recover more than $2,500 in merchandise

At approximately 1:21 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13, Bend Police responded to a report of shoplifting at Walmart Supercenter on Pinebrook Boulevard in Bend. Loss prevention at the store indicated that two customers had wheeled two full shopping carts out of the store without paying and were loading the merchandise into a white pickup truck with a brown tarp on the back of it.

The vehicle and suspect descriptions matched a previous theft at Winco Foods, in which a woman had attempted to wheel out a shopping cart full of merchandise before being caught. In that incident, the merchandise recovered totaled $341.  

Officers stopped the suspect vehicle at Robal Road and U.S. Highway 20, and arrested Dorthy James, Jessica Tufti and Wade Bennett, who was hiding underneath some of the merchandise in the vehicle. James and Bennett are suspects in additional shoplifting cases in Redmond. James also had a warrant out of Jefferson County.

Charges: Theft I, Criminal Conspiracy (Class C Felony)

Wade Daily Bennett, 32-year-old Warm Springs resident 
Charges: Theft III, Criminal Conspiracy (Class C Felony), Criminal Conspiracy (Class A Misdemeanor)

All three were transported to the Deschutes County Jail. 

When officers returned the merchandise to Walmart, it totaled $2,547.59.
