Stolen Trailer Recovered

On March 9th 2023 at 10:41 a.m. a concerned citizen called the Coos County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center to report a white Jeep pulling a flatbed trailer which drove into the woods near milepost 3.5 on Transpacific Parkway  (North Spit). The reporting  party explained that the trailer appeared to be brand new, and the Jeep appeared to be severely damaged. The reporting party advised this area was also visibly marked off-limits to vehicles by way of posted signs on the side of the roadway.

Deputy Mong responded to the area and located the white Jeep about 100 feet off the roadway, hidden in the brush. Deputy Mong contacted the vehicle and located Coy Smith (30) years of age from Bandon, along with his three children inside the vehicle. Deputy Mong noticed the trailer was attached to the Jeep by a single ratchet strap, which was very suspicious.

Detective Davis and Deputy Gray arrived on the scene and assisted Deputy Mong with the investigation. It was learned the trailer had been stolen from North Bend Power Sports in the city of North Bend late last night. North Bend Police Office Sanne also arrived on the scene a short time later. Deputy Gray was able to successfully retrieve the trailer from the slough and deep sand, by utilizing his patrol truck. The trailer was then returned back to its owners.

Coy Smith (30) years of age, was arrested and transported to the Coos County Jail on the charges of theft I, criminal trespass II and criminal mischief III.  Mr. Coy’s children were released to their mother who was also on scene. The incident was cross reported to DHS. (Child Welfare Division)
