CAR DRIVES OFF SELLWOOD BRIDGE ONTO HWY 43, MAJOR CRASH TEAM RESPONDING

On Saturday, August 12, 2023, at 2:21 a.m., officers from the Central Precinct responded to a crash at the west end of the Sellwood Bridge. The single car crash left the car on its roof down on South Macadam Avenue. The driver was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. There were no other occupants in the car.

Details surrounding the crash are limited at this time. The Portland Police Bureau Major Crash Team is responding to the scene to investigate. During the investigation the Sellwood Bridge and South Macadam Avenue near the bridge will be closed in both directions. The closure is expected to last several hours.

UPDATE - The Major Crash Team investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling westbound on the Sellwood Bridge, tried to turn northbound on South Macadam Avenue, lost control, hit a raised island, rolled over the wall and landed upside down below the bridge. Speed and alcohol are believed to have been a factor. The driver remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
