Roberts Mountain Fire

ROSEBURG, OR:  On Friday, August 18, 2023, at approximately 4:18 pm., crews from Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA), Douglas County Fire District No. 2, Winston Dillard Fire Department, Myrtle Creek Fire Department, Riddle Fire Protection District, Oregon State Police (OSP) and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) responded to a 10.34-acre brush and grass fire located near milepost 116 of Interstate 5, on the northbound side.

Upon initial assessment, the fire was estimated to be ½ an acre, and moderately climbing up the mountain. Thanks to a nearby water source, helicopter bucket drops were able to knock down the forward spread of the fire quickly. Collaborative groundwork from all responders, including a DFPA Dozer, aided in getting a hose lay and control line around the perimeter of the fire quickly. As of 7:40 pm, the fire has been 100% trailed, plumbed, and the dozer has been released from the fire.

Interstate 5 has not been closed to through traffic; however, responders are parked along the shoulder of the highway. We are asking the public to be cognizant of all responders working diligently in the area. Please prioritize their safety and kindly move over to the left lane while passing by.

Crews will remain on scene, mopping up hot spots through the evening and patrol of the area, which will include heat and smoke checks will continue for several days.

The cause of the fire has been found to be human-caused, vehicle-related, and is under active investigation.
