Reckless Driver Arrested After Fleeing in Marion County
May 28, 2025 – In the early hours of the morning, Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies arrested a suspect following a vehicle pursuit that began off Lancaster and ended east of Salem.
The vehicle had previously eluded deputies on three separate occasions, each time driving recklessly. Due to concerns for public safety, deputies had not engaged in active pursuits during those prior incidents.
Deputies observed the suspect vehicle leaving Tony’s Bar. They followed the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver failed to stop and fled.
A pursuit was authorized, and with assistance from the Salem Police Department (SMP), spike strips were successfully deployed. The suspect vehicle continued eastbound on Sunnyview Road at low speeds, eventually losing a tire near Howell Prairie Road.
The vehicle eventually came to a stop, and deputies initiated a high-risk vehicle stop. During the stop, the suspect reversed the vehicle, striking a patrol car, and became high-centered off the roadway. The driver initially refused to follow commands but ultimately exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without further incident.
The driver, 37-year-old Rafael Tirado of Salem, was found to be under the influence and was lodged at the Marion County Jail on multiple charges, including DUII and Attempt to Elude.
