Skier Dies on Mt. Ashland *UPDATE*

Jackson Co. Sheriff's Office  - 02/18/19  An autopsy performed Monday, February 18, 2019, revealed Johnathan Patrick Likeke Walker, 23, died of suffocation following a skiing accident on Mt. Ashland on Saturday. During the investigation, deputies learned that Walker was skiing in a group of three Mt. Ashland Ski Patrol members.  Walker was the last of the group to descend the hill.  The others looked back to find that Walker had skied into a tree well and had become trapped upside down in the snow.  They climbed back up the steep hill and worked to free Walker from the snow, but he was not breathing. Efforts to resuscitate Walker by ski patrol members, as well as by medical personnel at the ski area, continued for approximately two hours.

Oregon State Police Seeks Public Assistance on Deceased Female Found North of Road's End in Lincoln County

Oregon State Police  - 02/17/19 6:32 PM On February 17, 2019 at approximately 5:00 PM, Oregon State Police, with the assistance of US Coast Guard and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, recovered the body of a deceased female in the ocean, in a cove, just north of “God’s Thumb”. The female is described as a white adult female with long dark brown hair. She was approximately 5’7” and 190-200 pounds. The Oregon State Police is continuing its investigation as to the specifics of her death but we are asking for the public’s assistance for information on her identity. If anyone has any information on a recent missing female, matching this description, please call (800) 452-7888 and reference case number SP 19-058230. Detective Carla Urbigkeit is the lead investigator. No photos are available or additional information is available at this time.

Man Dies Two Days After Single Vehicle Crash Into a Tree

Washington Co. Sheriff's Office  - 02/17/19  On Friday, February 15, 2019, at 6 p.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a single vehicle crash at NW Bronson Road and NW Roseburg Terrace in the community of Bethany.  A witness reported seeing a car leave the road and hit a tree.  Responding emergency crews had to extricate the driver, 27-year-old Zachary Benjamin of Hillsboro.  Mr. Benjamin was taken to a Portland hospital with life-threatening injuries.  On Sunday, February 17, Mr. Benjamin died at the hospital. The Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team responded to assist with the investigation.  Deputies do not yet have a suspected cause for the crash which remains under investigation.

Jackson Co. Sheriff's Office  - 02/17/19 Update, 2/17/19 at 10:35 a.m. The decedent in Saturday's incident on Mt. Ashland was identified as Johnathan Patrick Likeke Walker, 23.  Walker lived and worked locally, but lived previously in Yakima, Wash.  The autopsy has been postponed until Monday. Theft From Vehicle, Suspect Arrested

Bend Police Dept.  - 02/16/19  On Saturday, February 16, 2019 at approximately 0654 hrs. 911 dispatch received a call from a third party reporting that they had just witnessed an unknown suspect break into a parked vehicle, remove items from within, and then flee the area on foot.  Bend Police responded to the scene and conducted an extensive area check.  Although the suspect was not located at this time, a purse belonging to the victim was located along the roadway. As the investigation continued, Bend Police Officers learned the victims credit cards were being unlawfully used at two seperate retail establishments in Bend.  Follow-up investigation, which included the reviewing of surveillance video where the victims credit cards were used, revealed a detailed description of a suspect in this case. More than 300 Firefighters Attend Weekend Training in Salem

Dept. of Public Safety Standards and Training  - 02/16/19  More than 300 career and volunteer firefighters from more than 100 fire agencies (city and tribal fire departments, fire districts, and wildland) throughout the state are at the Oregon Public Safety Academy in Salem this weekend for the State's annual Winter Fire School. This is the 16th annual Winter Fire School hosted by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) at the Oregon Public Safety Academy 4190 Aumsville Highway in Salem. Eleven classes are being offered by the National Fire Academy, DPSST, and the City of Dallas Fire & EMS Department. Violent Crimes Task Force Apprehends Local Woman

Jackson Co. Sheriff's Office  - 02/16/19 MEDFORD, Ore. – The Pacific Northwest Violent Offenders Task Force (PNVOTF) was tasked with locating and apprehending Kayla Navarro, 26, of Medford.  Navarro was wanted by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) in Indiana, on a federal warrant for Conspiracy to Distribute Controlled Substances, as well as a probation violation. On February 13, the investigation led the Task Force to a home in the City of Medford where Navarro was seen entering a vehicle.  A traffic stop was made on the vehicle, and Navarro was taken quickly taken into custody.  Another passenger of the vehicle was also arrested on an outstanding warrant.  Both Navarro and the other passenger were found to be in possession of methamphetamine and heroin.  Navarro is lodged in the Jackson County Jail awaiting prosecution and extradition. Suspected Serial Bank Robber Arrested in Beaverton

FBI - Oregon  - 02/15/19  Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies, with the assistance of Portland Police Bureau, Beaverton Police Department and the FBI, arrested Robert Norman Benham on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at his Beaverton home without incident. According to the federal criminal complaint filed in this case, Benham, age 53, faces charges related to a series of bank robberies that occurred starting in mid-December. Those charged robberies include: December 11, 2018 - Wells Fargo Bank (located inside a Thriftway), 7410 SW Oleson Road, Portland December 24, 2018 - Columbia Bank, 4805 SW 77th Avenue, Washington County January 30, 2019 - Columbia Bank, 4805 SW 77th Avenue, Washington County Benham appeared before a federal magistrate judge on Wednesday, and the judge ordered him held pending further court proceedings. Investigators are gathering information related to as many as six other unsolved bank robberies in this area between November 2018 and now. Anyone

Firefighters Rescue One from Submerged Vehicle

Forest Grove Fire & Rescue  - 02/15/19  This morning at 8:20, firefighters were dispatched to a reported motor vehicle crash on NW Wilson River Highway (Oregon Highway 6) near the 55900 block. It was reported that the vehicle was involved in a pursuit with law enforcement and had crashed into the Gales Creek. The driver of the vehicle had made it out of the vehicle and was pulled to shore by law enforcement officers prior to fire units arriving. Minutes later, firefighters arrived and began to deploy water rescue equipment to try and access the heavily damaged vehicle that sat partially submerged in the very cold water. It was found that a passenger was entrapped in the vehicle and a plan was established to use tow trucks to pull the vehicle to shore and then bring it up to the roadway. It took crews about 30 minutes from dispatch time to bring the vehicle to shore and another 30 minutes to get the vehicle from the shore up the steep embankment to the roadway to extricate the p

Gresham Police Dept  - 02/15/19  Gresham, Ore.— Gresham Police made an arrest in yesterday’s deadly shooting. Yesterday at approximately 1:00 p.m., police responded to the report of a shooting at 911 SE 187th Ave. Officers arrived on scene and discovered that one person was deceased. As a result of the investigation, 23-year-old Schwanna Waters, of Gresham, was arrested for Manslaughter in the First Degree. Detectives are still combing through the evidence to discover what lead up to the shooting. We are not releasing the name of the victim pending notification of next of kin. Man Convicted of Murder in 2015 Shooting

Washington Co. District Attorney's Office  - 02/15/19  HILLSBORO, Ore.- On February 15, 2019, a Washington County jury found Andrew Guy Moret guilty of Murder and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Judge Andrew R. Erwin oversaw the case. Senior Deputy District Attorney Bracken McKey and Deputy District Attorney Rayney Meisel prosecuted the case against Moret. On September 13, 2015, Moret shot Alonzo Sentel Gregg nine times near Dandy’s Deli in Hillsboro. Gregg died at the scene. Moret was arrested three days after the shooting and charged with Gregg’s murder. Moret, who served as his own attorney in the case, claimed self-defense in the shooting of Gregg. The jury disagreed and found him guilty. The Washington County District Attorney’s Office would like to acknowledge the Hillsboro Police Department and Detective Sean Magnuson for their work on this case which spanned more than three years. Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident

Deschutes Co. Sheriff's Office  - 02/13/19 On Tuesday, 02/13/19, at approximately 10:21 AM, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a reported injury motor vehicle accident in the 65000 block of Old Bend Redmond Highway near Journey Avenue.  Deschutes County 911 received reports of a single vehicle that had driven through a fence and impacted head on into a tree which was reported to be operated by an elderly male driver with no passengers.  Deputies arrived on the scene with medics from the Bend Fire Department and determined the driver, identified as Frank Farey, had been operating a red 2002 Suzuki SUV traveling northbound on Bend Redmond Highway, when for unknown reasons at this time, failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway.  Mr. Farey drove off the embankment into the yard of a residence on the east side of the roadway, crashing through a fence and impacting head on into a large juniper tree causing significant front end damage to the vehicle. 

Serious Injury Crash on US Hwy 97 Turns Fatal

Oregon State Police  - 02/13/19  On February 7, 2019 at approximately 11:45 AM, Oregon State Police (OSP) Troopers responded to a serious injury crash on US Hwy 97 near milepost (MP) 133. OSP has learned the seriously injured driver succumbed to her injuries on February 09, 2019. The preliminary investigation revealed a southbound Ford Edge, driven by Anita Johnson (age 75 from Redmond) was slowing for another vehicle when a 1994 Kenworth tractor- trailer with a semi-trailer, driven by Chelsea Rice (age 28 from Aumsville) loaded with gravel rear ended the Ford Edge. The Ford Edge went off the highway to the right and struck a tree.  The Kenwood came to rest partially blocking the slow lane and right shoulder. Johnson sustained life threatening injuries and was transported, by ground ambulance, to St. Charles Hospital in Bend where she died from her injuries on February 9, 2019. SAR Searching for Missing Mt Angel Man

Douglas Co. Sheriff's Office  - 02/12/19 TOKETEE FALLS, Ore.  – Douglas County Search and Rescue has suspended the search for Jeffery Vance, a 30 year-old missing Mt. Angel man. Deputies began searching for Vance on Monday, February 4, 2019, when he was reported lost by his friend, 29-year old Anthony Fennimore of Salem. Fennimore relayed to deputies that he and Vance had been in the area of Clear Water when they experienced mechanical trouble and walked away from the vehicle they were operating. Initially, Fennimore reported they had been lost since Friday, February 1, 2019. Deputies have since been able to determine the two became lost and separated on Sunday, February 3, 2019. Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue along with assistance from several agencies has searched for Vance over several days with no sign of Vance. Deputies Investigating Fatal Crash Involving Pedestrian in Aloha

Sheriff's Office  - 02/12/19  On February 11, 2019, at 8:58 p.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a crash involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Southwest Tualatin Valley Highway and Southwest 178th Avenue in the community of Aloha. As a passerby was calling 9-1-1, a Metro West ambulance came upon the scene and rendered aid to a 52-year-old male pedestrian. He was transported to OHSU Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. During their initial investigation, deputies learned that a black 2004 Jaguar X-Type was traveling eastbound on Southwest Tualatin Valley Highway when it struck the pedestrian in the roadway. The involved driver, a 32-year-old Beaverton man, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. The circumstances of the collision continue to be investigated. Coos Bay Police Department FB Page 2/11/19 On February 11, 2019, at approximately 0911 hours, Officers from the Coos Bay Police Department responded to 235 N. Wasson Street for a report of a male with a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, Officers found an adult male subject with a gunshot wound to his arm and leg. Bay Cities Ambulance and Coos Bay Fire personnel responded and transported the subject to Bay Area Hospital for treatment. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation. At this time, there is no immediate danger to the public and no arrests have been made.

Update on Missing Person Investigation

Bend Police Dept.  - 02/11/19 On February 11th, 2019 at about 2:00 PM, The Deschutes County Search and Rescue deployed a team of 27 searchers and Sheriff’s Office personnel to assist the Bend Police Department with this ongoing missing person’s investigation. After approximately 2 ½ hours of searching, two human scent K-9 teams and another searcher began checking the area of Cooley Rd. and NE 18th St. Upon a search of the area, these searchers located a deceased male within a large hole in an area that was under construction. The male was mostly covered with snow. Investigators determined the male was John Love. Bend PD investigators are working with the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death. John Love’s next-of-kin have been notified.

Crash on I-84 Causes Diesel Spill

Oregon State Police  - 02/11/19  On February 11, 2019 at 10:30 AM, Oregon State Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a non-injury commercial motor vehicle crash which leaked approximately 2,500 gallons of diesel onto the highway. Preliminary investigation a Space Age semi-tractor pulling two tanker trucks was eastbound on I-84 near milepost 54. The driver, James Altman, age 34 from Portland, was driving too fast for the snowy conditions on the roadway. Altman lost control of the commercial motor vehicle and the tankers flipped onto their sides. When the tankers flipped they started leaking onto the diesel onto the highway. The diesel eventually seeped underneath the barrier onto the westbound lanes of travel. Two tanks completely spilled their diesel. The highway has been partially blocked since 10:30 AM. Space Age has contracted a company to clean-up the spill and tows are on scene. ODOT and OERS have been notified and are en route to assist. The highway is expected to op

Dept. of Public Safety Standards and Training  - 02/11/19  The Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) is pleased to announce the graduation of its 113th Basic Telecommunications Class. The two-week course includes emergency call handling techniques, stress management, civil liability, ethics, criminal law, overview of fire-rescue and law enforcement operations, and a number of other topics. Upon completion of the course, students will return to their employing agency to continue their training for a number of months with a field training officer. The 9-1-1 training program began in 1993 when the Oregon Legislative Assembly enacted legislation which requires that individuals who receive emergency calls for assistance from the public, meet professional standards for training and certification.
