WHALE DIES AFTER STRANDING NEAR BANDON SATURDAY

Oregon Parks and Recreation Dept. Bandon, Ore. -- What has been tentatively identified as a 38' Sei whale became stranded on the Oregon coast south of Bandon Saturday afternoon, September 5. Oregon State Park rangers, the Oregon State Police, Oregon State University,  Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network , and representatives of the  West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network  and  NOAA Fisheries  responded. While alive when it first came ashore, the Sei whale was stranded by the tide and died Saturday evening. Based on its size, it was a subadult male, meaning it was not yet fully-mature. The necropsy will be led today, Sunday, September 6 by Oregon State University,  World Vets , and  Sealife Response, Rehabilitation and Research . The necropsy will allow marine mammal biologists to collect samples to try to determine what may have caused the animal to strand. The carcass will be buried on the beach shortly thereafter. Home fire fatally injures pets, displaces six in Hillsboro

Hillsboro Fire and Rescue An off-duty firefighter was the first to call 911 at 11:35 am on September 4 to report dark grey smoke coming from the windows of a home in the 600-block of SE 68th Ave in Hillsboro. Hearing smoke alarms alerting from inside the residence, the firefighter tried to make contact with the residents at the front door with no response. Within four minutes, Engine 6 from Cherry Lane station arrived to find smoke coming from an attic vent and initiated entry to attack the fire. Moments later, Engine 2 arrived and crews confirmed a working a fire. The incident was upgraded to a first alarm to bring additional units to the scene. Engine 3 arrived to assist with fighting the fire and Engine 2 transitioned to a search of the home. Firefighters from Truck 5 advanced to the roof to create ventilation to release heated gas and smoke from the home and assist in the firefighting efforts. Oregon City Police Arrest Man Following Officer Involved Shooting

Oregon City Police Dept. Just after 8:45 am this morning, several Oregon City Police Department Officers responded to the 15900 block of Moss Lake Way in Oregon City after a neighborhood resident called to report a suspicious vehicle that showed up overnight.  A Gladstone Police Department K-9 Handler also responded to assist after Officers learned the license plate displayed on the vehicle was previously reported as stolen.  Officers attempted to contact the driver of the vehicle, but he fled through the neighborhood.  During the brief encounter, the driver, identified as Craig McCarthy, intentionally rammed his vehicle into a marked police car and shots were fired by Officers.  Mr. McCarthy was subsequently taken into custody by Oregon City Officers and the Gladstone Police K-9 after a short foot chase.  He was taken to a hospital and treated for injuries stemming from the K-9 and vehicle crash.  One Officer was also transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries

Recent Wildfires in Lookingglass Area Suspicious

Douglas Forest Protective Association Fire officials with the Douglas Forest Protective Association say that two recent wildfires northwest of Winston that occurred alongside Lookingglass Road are suspicious in nature and may be related. The first fire occurred during the afternoon of Thursday, September 3rd and burned 1/2 acre of wildland fuels while the second fire burned a quarter acre of grass the following day. DFPA is conducting a joint investigation with the  Douglas County Sheriff's Office  and  Oregon State Police  to identify the responsible party. Anyone with information about either fire is asked to contact either DFPA or DCSO.

STRUCTURE FIRE (FATALITY)

Grants Pass Dept. of Public Safety At 4:18 AM on Saturday, September 5, 2020 the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety received several 911 calls reporting a structure fire in the SW G St area.  When Fire and Police units arrived, they located the fire at 50 SW Western Ave. The residence was fully involved with fire.  Fire personnel from Grants Pass Fire/Rescue, and Rural Metro began working the fire.  Pacific Power and Light responded to assist with live power lines that had fallen due to the fire.   As a precaution, fire crews evacuated several residences nearby. After one hour of aggressive firefighting, the fire was knocked down. During a search of the remaining structure, fire crews located human remains.  The remains have not yet been identified.  Detectives from the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety responded to assist with the investigation of the fire.  Further details will be released once the remains have been identified and next of kin has been notified. 

REMINDER: Search and Rescue Volunteers Wanted

Sheriff's Office DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - The deadline is fast approaching and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office is still seeking dedicated members of the community who are willing to volunteer their time to the Search and Rescue Division. Under Oregon Law, the Sheriff of each county is tasked with the responsibility of Search and Rescue efforts. In Douglas County that means the Sheriff is responsible for the searching for lost and missing subjects within the 5,000 square miles of the county. The kind of people we are looking for are motivated individuals willing to give their precious time to help their community. Search and Rescue is not exclusive to any particular type of person or skill set. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is looking for individuals capable of physical tasks ranging from wilderness searching to technical rope rescues, to individuals willing to help prepare meals for search crews, or people who want to help maintain equipment for

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY- Grants Pass

Grants Pass Dept. of Public Safety Between mid-August and just yesterday, the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety received four complaints of suspicious activity taking place at the larger retail and grocery stores along the Grants Pass Parkway.  Each of the four complainants said they were followed by 3 or 4 men who did not appear to be shopping.  Most of the citizens reporting the suspicious behavior had their small children with them at the time, and could only describe the men as average looking and people of Hispanic origin. On Wednesday, September 2nd, 2020 police were called to similar disturbance at the Wal Mart.  A detailed investigation led to the arrest of 33-year-old Juan Soldevilla for Sex Abuse 3, Sexual Harassment, and Invasion of personal privacy 2.  It is believed Soldevilla was using the camera on his cellular phone to take pictures up the dress of a female shopper, otherwise known as up-skirting.  We would like to remind citizens to always be aware

REQUESTING PUBLIC'S ASSISTANCE IN LOCATING STOLEN EQUIPMENT -- DOUGLAS COUNTY

Oregon State Police The Oregon State Police (OSP) is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a piece of stolen equipment from a theft that occurred south of the Canyonville along Interstate 5 in southern Douglas County.   On August 31, 2020 OSP troopers responded to a theft along Interstate 5 near milepost 96.  Troopers were made aware that, sometime between the evening of August 28 and the morning of August 31, a Toro Dingo (Skid Steer) TX1000 had been removed from a construction site without permission.    The attached pictures are the actual piece of equipment for reference.  OSP is requesting if anyone saw suspicious activity in the area during that time or knows the whereabouts of the piece of equipment to please call OSP at *OSP or 800-442-2068.  Reference case number SP20-247191 when calling with information. 

FATAL CRASH ON HWY 34 - LINN COUNTY

Oregon State Police On September 3, 2020 at approximately 8:11 P.M., Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to a two vehicle collision on Hwy 34 near milepost 3. Preliminary investigation revealed a Honda motorcycle, operated by Curtis James (63) of Corvallis, was eastbound and turned left to go (north) onto Riverside Dr.  He turned into the path of and collided with a westbound Ford F-150 pickup operated by Steven Harder (54) of Corvallis.  James sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The westbound lane remained closed for approximately 2.5 hours. OSP was assisted by the Benton County Sheriff's Office, ODOT, and Corvallis Fire and Rescue.
