THREE ALARM FIRE DAMAGES BUILDING AT BLUE HERON PAPER MILL IN OREGON CITY

Image
Clackamas Fire Dist. #1 At 2:06 p.m. Firefighters were called to the abandoned Blue Heron Paper Mill located at 419 Main Street in Oregon City for a report of a fire in a building. First arriving crews reported heavy black smoke from a large abandoned commercial building, at the south end of the mill property and went to work to locate the fire, ventilate the structure and attempt to search the building.  The fire was quickly upgraded to a second and third alarm, bringing in additional firefighting resources. As crews were begining firefighting operations, fire conditions changed, causing structural instability of the building and extremely high interior temperatures. Several trucks with large aerial ladders and waterways were positioned around the building to spray water from above to extinguish the fire, while keeping firefighters in a safe location.  Additional fire hydrants were needed to support th

Image
Clackamas Co. Sheriff's Office A getaway car with a dead battery helped deputies arrest two thieves on a variety of charges after a failed heist at the Clackamas Promenade Kohl's department store. At 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 30, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to Clackamas Promenade on the report of a theft that had just occurred at the Kohl's department store. Dispatchers relayed that Kohl's loss-prevention officers had spotted a subject running from the store carrying an armful of stolen merchandise. They also reported spotting a second male who might be involved. This second male was next to a getaway car that wasn't making much of a getaway. When the first suspect carrying the stolen merchandise reached the getaway car, the duo ran into some bad luck: The car's battery was dead, and the two men needed a jump-start. The suspects reportedly began asking others in the parking lot for a jump. This unfortunate delay proved to be their undoing:

CLIMBER FALLS 15 FEET INTO FUMAROLE ON MT. HOOD

Clackamas Co. Sheriff's Office Just before 1:30 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2020, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office  Search & Rescue (SAR) Coordinators  learned of a climbing accident on Mt. Hood. A climber --  Caroline Sundbaum , 32, of Portland -- had fallen into a fumarole in the Devil's Kitchen area, located around 11,200-foot elevation on Mt. Hood. A fumarole is an opening that emits steam and volcanic gases. Mt. Hood is an active volcano. Another climber in the area had seen Sundbaum sit down on her pack to rest. A few moments later, he noticed Sundbaum had disappeared. He realized there was a hole in the snow where she'd been sitting. Sundbaum had fallen about 15 feet into the fumarole. It's fortunate another climber witnessed this incident -- it would have been extremely difficult to locate Sundbaum otherwise, and the air inside fumaroles can be toxic and potentially deadly. The witness called  911  and then took immediate action. He was able to make h
